THE BASICS
What SGPA and CGPA actually mean at VTU
VTU runs a Choice Based Credit System, so your result card isn’t a simple average of marks — subjects with more credits carry more weight. SGPA and CGPA are how that weighting gets expressed as a single, comparable number.
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) covers one semester: the credit-weighted average of the grade points you earned across every subject in that semester.
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) covers your entire program: the credit-weighted average of every semester’s SGPA, from semester one through to your final semester.
Why it isn’t a plain average
- A 4-credit core subject affects your SGPA far more than a 1-credit activity course.
- Two students with identical marks can have different SGPAs if their credit loads differ.
- CGPA is not an average of SGPAs either — it’s weighted by how many credits each semester carried.
- Lateral entry students calculate CGPA from semester 3 onward, since they skip the first year.

Say a semester has five subjects:

WHY IT MATTERS
Where your SGPA and CGPA actually get used
VTU’s own portal doesn’t always show a clean SGPA breakdown, and manually weighting every subject by its credits is where most self-calculated numbers go wrong.
- Placement drives usually screen by CGPA cut-off before anything else.
- Higher-study applications — M.Tech, MS, MBA — ask for CGPA on a 10-point scale directly.
- Scholarship and hostel renewal forms often need last semester’s SGPA as proof.
- Tracking SGPA every semester shows you the trend before it becomes your final CGPA.

Your University Seat Number follows a fixed pattern, useful when filling out any academic form alongside your SGPA/CGPA:

QUICK ANSWERS
Frequently asked questions
Yes. All three schemes use the same 10-point grading scale and the same SGPA/CGPA formula, so the calculator applies regardless of which scheme your batch follows — only your subject credits differ between schemes.
An absent or failed subject is graded F, worth 0 grade points. It still carries its full credit value in the total-credits figure, which is why a single F can pull an otherwise strong SGPA down noticeably.
No. Since SGPA is credit-weighted, any subject entered with 0 credits contributes nothing to either the numerator or denominator of the formula — it has no effect on the result either way.
Lateral entry students join directly into semester 3, so semesters 1 and 2 are excluded entirely. Just enter your SGPA and credits starting from semester 3 onward in the CGPA tab above.
VTU’s commonly used approximation is Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. It’s an estimate accepted by many employers and institutions, but always check the exact formula your specific requirement expects.
